" His face was numb, his mouth trembled." This is a reaction to the realization that the world has changed. We are in suspense because we can 'feel' his fear and we don't know how much has changed.

I think it's quite mysterious and even a bit scary how she said that at the end of the story. It could defenitly be real if you ask me, a boy looking for shelter entered a house witha creepy grandma. ALL SUMMER IN A DAY
